The immediate, high impact, low-hanging fruit in medicine right now is the proper matching of the universe of patients with the universe of existing medications and other treatments. Properly and precisely done, and pushed eventually to preventive care, this matchmaking can provide better solutions to patients right now, decreased costs to payors due to a reduction or elimination of trial-and-error approaches and need for higher levels of care, and a healthier population. There will be new and better medications and treatments in the future, but with proper matchmaking we can make a big impact right now.
Companies like Foundation Medicine and others in the oncology space were built on the premise of doing this for cancer. After two decades of work, we have developed something similar for mental health.
