Freedom from Addictions2022-11-20

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.

Chinese Proverb

Addictions, broadly defined, are all around us. They are usually things that are fast, easy and rewarding in the short term. They increase your life satisfaction (happiness, hope, meaning) in a temporary and illusory way. In the long-term, they are destructive to true life success (health, wealth, and influence).

There are three main types of addictions: biochemical addictions (such as sex, alcohol, drugs), environmental addictions (such as relationships, settings, objects), and informational addictions (such as cults, screens, fictions).

Reducing addictions is the fastest way to improve your life. First one needs to recognize and acknowledge them. Second, one needs to avoid them. Third, one needs to fill one’s life with truly constructive things, even if they take longer, are harder, and are delayed gratification. Best way to start on that journey is by journaling or having an app tracker, along with accountability to people who truly care for you- family, friends, trusted peers, mentors, or caregivers. That is why 12 step programs work. Sometimes, to kickstart things, a detox and biological reset is needed, guided by precision/personalized medicine approaches.

Live. Happier. Longer.
