Unstuck2024-07-29

Getting stuck is reactive, getting unstuck is proactive.

Sherene McHenry

Getting people unstuck and moving on with their lives, so they do not need to see me anymore, other than perhaps for yearly check-ups, is one of my greatest joys as a psychiatrist. People sometimes get stuck in a rut in their lives. Psychiatric patients get stuck in bad mental states, in wrong environments, and/or on wrong treatments.

The solution is to assess people comprehensively in a bio-socio- psychological way. Then, simplify their treatments and/or start them on correct ones, at relatively low doses with minimal or no side-effects, so they can stay on them for the long-term. Then build their confidence and resilience, so they become independent of the healthcare system.

This change in identity from a patient to a person who moves on with their life is great to see. It is what we have been working diligently towards for the last two decades, building a comprehensive framework for mental health, with better understanding, as well as the use of blood tests and digital tools.
