Next-Generation Precision Medicine for Mood Disorders2026-08-04
“The life you have led does not need to be the only life you have.”
—Anna Quindelen
One in five people will have a clinical mood disorders episode in their lifetime. Current diagnosis is fairly imprecise; treatment is trial and error. Much misery, lack of productivity, and in some cases tragedies like suicides, ensue.
There is a better way forward: precision psychiatry.
Our new magnum opus on next-generation precision psychiatry for mood disorders came out last week in the top impact SpringerNature specialty journal Molecular Psychiatry. A multi-year effort by my excellent teams, a lot of perseverant, hard, innovative and precise work.

We think it will help revolutionize the field of mood disorders, three-fold:
- Understanding: The biology of mood disorders is related to life and death, literally (cell survival vs. apoptosis).
- Diagnostics: A significant number of patients diagnosed with depression are in fact on the bipolar spectrum, which has therapeutic implications.
- Therapeutics: Precise matching to treatments. The rebirth of (low dose) lithium. The utility of using omega-3 fatty acids. Other drugs identified for repurposing for mood disorders.
Science and medicine should not be dogmatic, and are never definitive. They move forward, as data and facts accumulate.
Live. Happier. Longer.
